Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program Introduced
|
Montreal, July 17, 2009 - The Association of Pediatricians of Quebec welcomes the action taken by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) to recognize the need for a universal newborn hearing screening program for Quebec, as well as the management of this condition.
The screening program, announced June 16 by Dr. Yves Bolduc, the Minister of Health and Social Services, and Mme Lise Thériault, the Deputy Minister of Social Services, will enable many children with neonatal deafness to receive early treatment in a well-structured environment with appropriate resources.
While the program represents a major investment on the part of the government, it also provides undoubted relief for the families of children with this impairment. Under the program, deafness screening tests during the first days of their child's life will be made available to parents and, if necessary, referral to more specific care. The family will thus receive direction and support, lessening the negative impact of the mental and economic hardships they might otherwise experience.
The Association of Pediatricians of Quebec also salutes the unstinting efforts of members of the Québec Coalition for Universal Newborn Hearing Screening to ensure the implementation of such a program in Quebec.
