N.B. - $19.5-M nursing home for Perth-Andover

Perth-Andover, February 5, 2010 - A $19.5-million nursing home will be built in Perth-Andover to replace Victoria Glen Manor Inc. Minister of State for Seniors Brian Kenny made the announcement on Feb. 4.
"A state-of-the art facility for the residents and staff at Victoria Glen Manor will transform long-term care services in this region," Kenny said. "As part of the strategy, Be Independent Longer, the provincial government is making major investments in nursing homes to improve long-term care facilities for seniors and to better meet the needs of our aging population."
Construction of the 65-bed nursing home will begin in the spring of 2011 with completion scheduled for the summer of 2012. The project will create about 175 construction jobs.
"This new nursing home is very good news for our community," said Stephanie Ebbett-McCarthy, board chair for Victoria Glen Manor Inc. "I hope that we have its continued support as this long-anticipated project moves forward."
Under the provincial government's capital renewal and replacement plan, 11 nursing homes are being replaced with new facilities, and two other new nursing homes will be built, in Neguac and Dieppe. Five nursing homes will undergo major additions; 31 will be renovated and six will undergo minor repairs.
The investment in nursing home infrastructure will total $400 million during the next five years. All new facilities are expected to be completed by 2016-17, creating 297 new beds across the province.
These beds will be in addition to the 403 beds already being added to the long-term care system, including the 216 opening in 2010 through a public-private partnership.
Projects will be funded through bank loans to individual homes as authorized by the Department of Social Development. Cost recovery for new and upgraded facilities will be calculated into the provincial funding provided for nursing home services each year. The provincial government does not own nursing homes, but it funds 85 per cent of nursing home operations, totalling more than $220 million annually.
The infrastructure improvements will provide more spacious facilities, new equipment and better ventilation, improved quality of space and more privacy and personal space for nursing home residents.
All new nursing home projects will follow one design and construction model. Nursing homes operated by non-profit organizations will work with the provincial government to follow the standardized model. This approach will allow for substantial savings in time, design and building costs. About 3,600 construction jobs will be created over several years.
