Inauguration of the new Cardiology Unit at the Montreal General Hospital
Modernizing patient well-being at the MUHC
|
Montreal, February 8, 2010 - On Feb. 5, the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is proud to celebrate the opening of its new Cardiology Unit, which includes a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, at the Montreal General Hospital. Designed according to innovative hospital standards, this unit will build upon excellence in care thanks to a modern combination of technology, space and ergonomics.
“As one of the world's foremost academic health centres, we aim to provide our patients and their families with the best care environment, and our professionals with the best tools for their trade," stated the Hon. Arthur T. Porter, MUHC Director General and CEO. “This project, which delivers a state-of-the-art intensive care unit and other important cardiology care facilities, is at the heart of our redevelopment vision. It is a fine example of what our modern Mountain Campus will offer Quebecers.”
A product of the 1960s, the original unit no longer met professional needs and caused problems for staff members in their daily tasks. “In a crisis situation, equipment needs to be within reach and all professionals need to work side-by-side next to the patient,” explained Dr. Jacques Genest, Director of Cardiology at the MUHC. “Acute cardiac care has gone through a major transformation in the past decade both in terms of technology and how care is provided; indeed, our old space was no longer up to modern standards.”
The unit is now equipped with thirteen spacious private rooms: six are dedicated to intensive care while the seven others will be used for intermediate care. The rooms also have private bathrooms and space for families to spend the night. The large space means that any necessary equipment can be moved in and out so that patients can undergo tests and receive treatment directly in their rooms. Patients and their families can therefore look forward to increased privacy, confidentiality, dignity and comfort.
The new facilities will benefit health care professionals, who will be able to provide compassionate care in an environment that establishes continuity of care from the critical phase to recovery. Space has been created for patient education and meetings with family members to involve and support them in the care process. The larger rooms will also facilitate teaching activities, as doctors and residents can now meet at a patient’s bedside without disturbing other patients or staff.
More than 800 patients are treated in this unit every year, the majority due to cardiac arrest, loss of consciousness, arrhythmia, angina, endocarditis or heart failure. This project was made possible thanks to the Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal, the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, and the generous donors of our Best Care for Life campaign.
