Cancer Care Navigator program to continue as partnership

Whitehorse, July 5, 2010 - Health and Social Services Minister Glenn Hart and Yukon Hospital Corporation (YHC) Board of Trustees chair Craig Tuton announced they will partner to continue the Cancer Care Navigator program out of Whitehorse General Hospital.

Until now, this program has been supported by federal funds. However, the federal government recently advised the initiative could no longer be supported as it was “out of scope” of the fund’s purposes. Consequently, other funds have been identified within hospital and Yukon government budgets.

“Finding funds has not been easy, with all the competing demands for service. However, through this new partnership with the hospital, we each take a piece of ownership for this program,” Hart said. “We recognize the important work the Cancer Care Navigator does, and the supports provided to Yukon residents diagnosed with cancer and their families, and we are sharing the responsibility for providing that service to those individuals.”

The minister said he had received many calls of support for the program, including from the Yukon Medical Association. “This program, in its short period of operation, helped a great many people,” Hart added.

“Through the pilot project of this program, we found the Cancer Care Navigator to be a tremendous resource for patients facing a cancer diagnosis. We are very pleased to partner with the government in providing this valuable service to Yukoners,” Tuton said.
