Four new doctors get residency training in Swift Current
|
July 9, 2010 - Four medical residents are receiving their training in family medicine at a brand new clinic in Swift Current.
This is the latest step in a plan by Saskatchewan's College of Medicine to expand medical education beyond Saskatoon.
"Having doctors train in Swift Current just makes all kinds of sense to me," Premier Brad Wall said. "Patients will have the advantage of services from these well trained and enthusiastic doctors, while these medical students will also benefit from a residency that will better match what they will be facing when training has been completed."
Health Minister Don McMorris said this new training model will go a long way to addressing Saskatchewan's physician shortage.
"If we give these new doctors a feel for what life is like across our great province, they will be more likely to consider working outside of larger centres, come graduation," McMorris said.
"The College of Medicine is a provincial resource mandated to serve the people of Saskatchewan," Dean of Medicine Dr. William Albritton said. "The expansion of our rural family medicine residency program to Swift Current is a positive step towards further developing our distributed medical education model and it demonstrates our commitment to serving the people of Saskatchewan."
"The University of Saskatchewan is committed to community outreach and engagement, and adding Swift Current to our existing complement of rural family medicine training sites speaks to this commitment," University of Saskatchewan President Peter MacKinnon said. "Our students now have more opportunities to continue their medical education in community-based environments."
Enhancing training to prepare medical graduates to practice in rural Saskatchewan is an important part of the government's physician strategy. The strategy also includes the development of a provincial physician recruitment agency; lifestyle and professional support programs designed to assist physicians, particularly those practising in rural areas; and a marketing campaign aimed at University of Saskatchewan medical students.
