The province is improving quality and patient safety for people in Cape Breton with an almost $1-million investment in new equipment, Deputy Premier Frank Corbett announced on July 16.

"New technology and equipment are important in continuing to provide safe, quality health care services," said Mr. Corbett, "This equipment will improve care and enhance safety for patients."

Investments at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital include $750,000 for a multi-purpose radiographic unit that will improve the quality and efficiency of diagnostic imaging.

"This funding helps give our staff some of the best tools and technology available today so they can continue to deliver quality diagnostics and care to our patients," said Jim Merkley, Cape Breton District Health Authority vice-president of operations and acting CEO. "Our staff is excited about being able to use state-of-the-art equipment and know that what they do has a direct benefit to patient care."

The district will also receive funding toward a $235,000 sterile processing department cart washer to enhance infection prevention and control. The equipment is used to wash and disinfect trays and pans used in surgical and ambulatory procedures. Under the cost-share formula for capital equipment, the Department of Health and Wellness will pay 75 per cent of the costs and the district will pay 25 per cent.

The province's investment is part of $15 million announced in December from its Jobs and Building 2012/13 Capital Plan. The money is earmarked for district health authorities and the IWK Health Centre to purchase or replace necessary equipment.
